National Time to Quit
Next GASO Day: November 17, 2016
The Great American Smokeout (GASO) is a national day held on the 3rd Thursday of November every year that challenges people to quit smoking that day, or make a plan to quit. Its hosted by the American Cancer Society and consists of community events held all around the country.
Annual GASO events first started popping up in the 1970s, after a man named Arthur P. Mullaney from Randolph, Massachusetts asked people to quit smoking for a day and donate the money they would’ve spent on cigarettes. Since then, GASO has been a day for smokers, nonsmokers and activists alike to educate people about the effects of tobacco and offer helpful ways to quit.
